Did you know that many of the symptoms we chalk up to aging are actually caused by sun damage? The sun’s ultraviolet light produces radiation that damages collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. As we lose these fibers, we see increased stretching, sagging and wrinkling in the skin. Repeated sun exposure and burning of the skin can cause cancer.
So what are some simple steps we can take to minimize further damage?
- Wear SPF protection daily, even when it’s a cloudy day! I love using a tinted sunscreen to double as my foundation.
- Find a great hat … it also adds a pop of fun to your outfit!
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!! Time in the sun depletes moisture in your skin.
- Consider treating the lines in your skin with Wrinkle Relaxers (such as Botox or Xeomin). This treatment will also prevent wrinkles from getting worse over time.
Being mindful of the sun on our skin is critical to aging gracefully and staying healthy!!
